“LOVE SONGS, LUTE SOLOS AND LAMENTS”
Music from 17th Century Europe
(including Danyel, D’India, Johnson, Monteverdi, Morley)

From the lyre of Orpheus to the guitars of Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, people have sung of their joys and woes to the plangent beauty of plucked strings; this recital focuses on the 17th century golden age of lute songs from Britain and Italy, and some of the treasures to be found away from the big names of the period.

"Airs and Graces"

Music for voice, lute and viols

Rating: *****

"The music of heaven is different for all of us. ‘The sound of trumpets while eating foie gras’ is how one cleric famously imagined it. But for me, the sound filtering through the Pearly Gates will surely be the soft-edged, veiled, gently ecstatic consort songs and dances of the 17th century. Which meant this concert given by the group Concordia and soprano Emma Kirkby began with a head start.

The English pieces by Dowland and Gibbons and Jenkins came over as more obviously strange, their weird spicy dissonances and cross-rhythms beautifully caught by the players. The French pieces, some by composers I’d barely heard of such as Moulinie and Boesset, were the real discovery.

All this muted delicacy might have felt unvaried over two hours, if it hadn’t been for Emma Kirkby’s wonderful way of revealing the larger, human quality of the songs - their humour, their gravity, their sprightly gaiety.

In Purcell’s Dear Pretty Youth she addressed her song not to us but the youth apparently dead at her feet. At the mournful end of Gibbons’s The Silver Swan she laid her head on one side.

These things could appear arch, but with Kirkby they seem totally natural; as does her voice, which negotiated the tricky runs and the sighing endings of the French pieces so effortlessly they came over as pure gesture. It all made for a guileless radiance which was irresistible." --Ivan Hewett, The Telegraph (January 2011)

The British Monarchy

The Queen’s Medal For Music 2010, 21 January 2011

THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT IS ISSUED BY THE PRESS SECRETARY TO THE QUEEN

The Queen has approved the award of Her Majesty's Medal for Music for the year 2010 to Dame Emma Kirkby.

Dame Emma will be presented with the Medal by The Queen at an audience later this year, but an informal announcement will be made by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, the Master of The Queen’s Music, at St John’s, Smith Square, on 26th January, where Dame Emma is performing.

Dame Emma is the sixth winner of the award, which was introduced in 2005 and is made annually to an individual (or group of musicians) judged to have had a major influence on the musical life of the nation. Previous winners are Sir Charles Mackerras (2005), Bryn Terfel (2006), Professor Judith Weir (2007), Kathryn Tickell (2008) and Sir Colin Davis (2009).

Dame Emma said she was "very pleased and grateful" to receive the Award. She said: "I feel extremely lucky to have worked so many years with excellent colleagues, both singers and instrumentalists, in the revival of music from the richest eras of our national heritage; this is repertoire offering joy and fulfilment to players and listeners alike and I am happy to see so many younger artists now adding their own voices to the endeavour." Sir Peter Maxwell Davies said: "I think it's marvellous that the world of early music has been recognised in this year's Queen’s Medal for Music, particularly that the award is going to Dame Emma Kirkby, who has done more than anybody to put this music in the centre of our musical consciousness."

Background

1. The nominating process for the recipient of the medal is overseen by a Music Committee under the chairmanship of the Master of The Queen’s Music, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies.

2. The committee members are Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, The Lord Moser, William Lyne, Sir Nicholas Kenyon, Richard Morrison, The Hon. Sir Humphrey Maud and Michael Berkeley.

3. The 75mm medal is designed by Bethan Williams and is cast in silver. All costs relating to the medal are funded by the Privy Purse.

PAEANS OF PRAISE!

Paeans of Praise!

“Decade In Review”
San Francisco Chronicle
“...Nicholas McGegan’s nearly annual march through the musical bounty of Handel’s oratorios and operas....when I look back on my year-end lists from the past decade, Philharmonia’s superb Handel performances show up like clockwork on practically every one.”

“Editor’s CD Review of Opera and Song”
CultureKiosque
“Adès captures the other-worldliness of Ariel with stratospheric writing for coloratura soprano, a role in which Cyndia Sieden excels, occasionally intelligible at heights when most sopranos have long ceased to articulate.”

“The Very Best of the Fall Opera Season”
The New York Observer
“In two recitals, one at Carnegie Hall and one at the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, Emma Kirkby created worlds of stillness in songs of the 17th century. I can’t get out of my head her encore at both recitals, Purcell’s Evening Hymn, which seems to go on forever and then ends much too quickly.”

“Top CDs of 2009”
Democrat and Chronicle
Daniel Taylor, The Voice of Bach. Taylor is one of the few countertenors of the world, raising his voice up to the mezzo-soprano range. The Bach selections on this disc are given an infinite boost with Taylor’s full, resonant and unique voice.”

“Best Classical Concerts of 2009”
The Oregonian
Orphée, Portland Opera. Phillip Glass’ operatic riff on the Orpheus legend stood out for its eye-catching set, powerful singing [soprano Lisa Saffer] and layered, pensive score.”

“Critics’ Pick for Best of ‘09”
The Star-Ledger
“Henry Purcell: Ten Sonatas in Four Parts, Matthew Halls harpsichord/organ. This beautifully produced recording from a U.K. period-strings group marked the 350th birthday of Purcell by showing how his polyphonic intimacies remain a lyrical, hypnotic marvel.”

KIRKBY CONQUERS ALL

Kirkby/Jacob Sold Out

The New York Times
“...her voice is richer and intensely expressive”

The Boston Globe
“...threading her vocal silver into his cloth-of-gold.”

The Washington Post
“...the chiseled beauty and dovetailing rapport in their musicmaking was a joy to hear.”

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
“Soprano Emma Kirkby and lutenist Jakob Lindberg make an absolutely perfect musical pair, performing in a seamless blend of style and expression.”

Kansas City Star
“Kirkby’s delicate yet crystal clear voice seemed a perfect match for the gentle sound of the lute.”

The Philadelphia Inquirer
“...something you want to keep etched in your brain forever.”
