Matthew Halls has established himself as one of today’s leading young conductors. He is Artistic Director of Retrospect Ensemble and was formerly Artistic Director of The King’s Consort. He has worked extensively with many of Europe’s foremost early music groups and as assistant conductor in opera houses including The Netherlands Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, Komische Oper Berlin, as well as at venues such as The Megaron, Athens, Lincoln Center, New York and Wiener Festwochen. Beyond the early repertoire for which he initially became known, Halls is known for his passion for the Germanic repertoire, particularly Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann and Schubert, and won acclaim most recently for his work with symphony orchestras in Hamburg, Iceland, and Ulster. North American engagements this year include performances with Les Violons du Roy, the Houston Symphony, and a return to Central City Opera for Madama Butterfly, for which he was immediately invited following his acclaimed debut there with Rinaldo in 2009.
